Guide: Before the Digital Learning Experience

Instructors:

  • Prepare the students for the virtual learning experience by making sure they have background knowledge about the parts of the excavator and their basic functions.
  • Consider what they need to know about the excavator components and function, inspection tips and if order is important, what they can expect to see, and the types of problems or red flags to watch out for.
  • Recognize that although some views or visuals provided aren’t perfectly representative of the real vehicle, the overall look and feel between excavator makes/models are similar.
  • Be sure students know the vocabulary words that will come up in the Excavator DLX. This simulation uses the attached List of Terms as students proceed through the inspection. If students aren’t familiar with these words, they can look them up beforehand.
Caution: If any part of the Digital Learning Experience will be used in an assessment that counts towards students’ final grades, students must be notified PRIOR to completing the DLX, in accordance with Conestoga Policies.

Students:

  • Should have an understanding of the key parts of the excavator before beginning the digital learning experience.
  • Review the vocabulary before doing the simulation. (Attached List of Terms) If students aren’t familiar with these words, they can look them up beforehand.
  • On the job, workers may have a checklist available to make sure they know what to inspect, but this won’t help them find those components if they don’t know where to look. This digital learning experience is designed to help them do so.

They will become familiar with inspecting:

  • Vehicle Exterior
  • Cab interior/exterior
  • Engine and fluid levels
