Guide: Executive Summary
The Approaches to Conflict and Escalated Situations (ACES) module is the VARLab’s Digital Learning Experience to let learners experience how communication skills can affect the outcome of interactions where conflict may occur.
Students are expected to have a general understanding about handling conflict in interpersonal interactions before beginning. The digital learning experience will give students the opportunity to try out different responses to a potential conflict, and see what results may occur.
Upon beginning, they will be greeted by Gabrielle, the digital teaching assistant, who
will provide an overview of the simulation and each scenario, tips on navigation, and
give feedback for the scenarios as needed.
Students will navigate by making selections to move forward, and receive feedback
and interpersonal advice about their responses.
Learning Outcomes:
The goal of the ACES learning experience is to learn how communication skills
can affect the outcome of interactions where conflict may occur.
- Learners navigate three distinct interpersonal situations that may result in conflict
or escalation, and identify effective and ineffective methods of managing those
potential conflicts.
- Learners explore each scenario, try different strategies and observe different
outcomes.
- Learners discover how factors like word choices, tone of voice, body language, and
attitude can change the escalation level of a conflict.
